A group known as the Church of Islam is seeking city zoning approval to develop a mosque in the shuttered Bob’s Bait and Tackle shop, 1512 Velp Ave.
The Green Bay City Council is scheduled to consider the matter Tuesday night.
Paul Eliason, a real estate broker involved in the possible property sale, said he believes most people in the neighborhood would welcome the Muslim house of worship.
“Religious preference is something that we hold dear in this country as a freedom,” he said.
But the alderman who represents the west-side area questioned whether many nearby residents and business owners know about the proposed development.
Alderman Ned Dorff said he might ask for a postponement on council action to allow for more public debate. Dorff said he has not heard from any constituents about the matter.
“That’s a tip-off that maybe the word didn’t get out,” he said. “We need to talk about this more publicly.”
